Daniel Arnan Quarshie - Home

Compound House Gallery presents HOME, a solo exhibition of archival manipulations by the artist Daniel Arnan Quarshie. Quarshie’s electric charcoal drawings of familial love, loss, and (be)longing are formed through research across multi-media collections. Photo albums, oral records, written words, and artistic canons are among the materials that Quarshie’s drawings mash together.

His cinematic montages collapse time on the picture plane. Skins slip away like masks; spirits are co-present with bodies. The feeling of dislocation collides with the intensity of human touch. The father blesses with his hands—Quarshie blesses with his chalk.

‘I follow the light,’ Quarshie says. ‘In the absence of color, all we have is the light. I follow the light.’

The exhibition places Quarshie’s human figures in conversation with their domestic ephemera. The aura lives not just in the bodies, but in the meaningful objects around them. Could Quarshie’s mother live in her handbag? Could his father remain in their rewinder? Could the exhibition conjure a ‘HOME’—a portal to past and future memory?
